Juliet Schor is Professor of Sociology at Boston College. Schor’s research over the last ten years has focused on issues pertaining to trends in work and leisure, consumerism, the relationship between work and family, women’s issues, and economic justice. Her latest book, Plenitude: The New Economics of True Wealth, offers a groundbreaking statement about the economics and sociology of ecological decline, suggesting a radical change in how we think about consumer goods, value, and ways to live.

Description: Please join Alameda School parents and volunteers for a 4-H Sustainable Schools Gathering. This is our 3rd 4-H Sustainable Schools Gathering for the 2011-12 school year. We will be rotating these gatherings to different schools throughout the year so we can share and learn.

Alameda School has been a 4-H Member school since 2011.

Alameda’s garden is new and in just one year they have accomplished a great deal!. The garden was built during the late winter/spring and dedicated on Earth Day 2011. They are currently in the process of developing a volunteer classroom garden rep system and will have had their first meeting on Jan. 31. The Alameda garden includes 12 raised beds – one for each grade level, one for the special learning classroom and 5 to be assigned to those with extra interest. They also have a butterfly garden, a native plant area and blueberries. This year they are focused on integrating the garden into the school culture so it is being used by teachers (via parent garden rep help), introducing vegetables in to the cafeteria with the help of our principal and vice-principal (handing out tasters on trays as kids wait in line for lunch) and several work parties. They plan to start turning more space in garden and they have a large open area where they hope to soon build an outdoor covered classroom. They have successfully secured several grants as well.

Title: Green Transportation Conference

Description: This conference on green transportation will include hands-on information on transportation electrification, natural gas and propane vehicles and infrastructure, as well as information on grants, tax credits and financing. Their Outdoor Learning Garden is an inspirational project that includes five different gardens and involves the entire school made up of many multicultural audiences. Come learn what Atkinson School is doing and some of the projects they have undertaken. Learn about the challenges they face, their successes and what they are planning for the future.

Description: On September 24th from 11:45AM to 3pm people from around the metro area will hop on bikes, buses, trains, skateboards and their own two feet for Moving Planet- Portland, Portland’s Climate Action Fest outside at Memorial Colliseum Commons. At the event, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about climate change, alternative energy, and citizen involvement groups they can join through speakers, exhibits, and information stations. Make sure to bring your cameras to interact with some of the exhibit photo opportunities! People will be motivated to take action on-site by writing cards to elected officials and making pledges to increase use of greener mobility modes such as carpooling, public transit, walking, and biking.
