Description: In Russia, Scandinavia and much of Northern Europe houses are heated by huge upright brick stoves, often floor to ceiling, weighing several tons. Some incorporate a bread oven, some a cooking stove. Known as Russian Stoves, Finnish heaters etc., they can be faced with decorative tiles (kachelofn). From a single daily firing with wood, they provide 24 hour slow heat to the whole house. They are clean burning and use little fuel. In North America until now your only choices have been to pay $10-25,000 to a specialist mason or buy a kit shipped from Finland and try to get it right yourself. Flemming and Karen Abrahamsson, famous for this stove work in Denmark, will come from Copenhagen to offer an 8-day professional course, possibly the first ever in the Western States. They will explore how owner-builders can use European traditional geometrics with adobe and Oregon Cob for a much cheaper version. Limit is 10 participants – so reserve yours space early!

Description: I’ve got two week-long natural building workshops coming up in the next few months. There are still openings in both of them, and I would appreciate help getting the word out quickly, since the first workshop which is coming up in just a couple of weeks. Both workshops cover multiple wall systems using earth and straw as well as earthen plasters and more. They will be excellent opportunities to learn a lot of natural building systems in a short time, including techniques that are appropriate for remodeling existing structures.

The first is June 14-19 in Covelo (Northern Mendocino County)

We’ll be building a bath house/sauna addition to a straw bale house on a small herb farm. Wall systems will be cob, slipstraw or light straw-clay, clay wattle, and wattle and daub. The cost of the workshop is $450-$600 sliding scale, including all meals and camping. For more info or to register, phone Monelle at 707-354-0176 or email gaiaspirit9@gmail.com.

The second is August 7-14 here at Emerald Earth

We’ll mainly be working on our new common house, a large to-code hybrid building which is about halfway done. We’ll be building cob, slipstraw, clay wattle, and slip-and-chip walls, as well as building an earthbag retaining wall, pouring an earthen floor, doing base and finish earthen plasters and clay aliz paint. The cost is $640 including all meals and camping. For more details, see our web site: www.emeraldearth.org, email workshops@emeraldearth.org, or call 707-972-3096.

peace and gratitude,
