Description: What Should You and Your Students Know about the “Green Economy”?
The future that your students will be living and working in will present challenges and opportunities that few of us could envision even 10 years ago. What do you need to know to make sure they are prepared?
By the year 2020, the world’s green economy will be worth roughly $3 trillion, according to the United Nations Environmental Program. But what, exactly, IS the “green economy”?

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes $50 billion for green jobs. What makes a job “green”, and how can you make sure your students have the knowledge and skills needed to get one?
You’ll find the answers to these questions and more, along with a comprehensive collection of curriculum resources that make it easy to translate those answers into standards-based instruction, at our “Green Pathways to the Future” Teacher Institute.
This unique professional development venue will give you an opportunity to hear about the green economy straight from the source: the business and industries that are building it. Morning breakout sessions will address these green economy sectors, both in terms of current activity and projections for the future:
Energy Efficiency: HVAC, Lighting, Computers & Appliances
Energy production: Solar, Wind, Other (geothermal, tidal, biomass)
Transportation: Cars, Mass Transit, and new ways to get from here to there.
Waste Management: “Cradle to Cradle” product and packaging design, Recycling
Architecture and Construction
Water: Water supply, Water conservation, Water treatment
Food: Agriculture, Gardens, Distribution, Preparation
Afternoon sessions will give you time, expert support, and access to award winning curriculum resources with which you can work out just how to integrate your new knowledge into classroom lessons and activities that support achievement of California curriculum and instruction standards in grades 5 – 12.
You’ll also have plenty of time for networking, both with your education colleagues and with green industry representatives.
You really don’t want to miss this!
The first “Green Pathways to the Future” Teacher Institute will take place December 10-11, 2009, in Southern California. This two-day event will provide for a variety of modes of interaction between educators and green industry/business representatives, as well as time and professional support for the process of curriculum integration.
The institute is appropriate for teachers of grades 5 – 12.
